Purchasing Policy

Timspec is concerned about the depletion of global rainforest and timber resources. Our ultimate goal is to only purchase timber from well-managed forests that have been accredited for both legal and sustainable criteria by third-party certification. Timspec, as a preference purchases timber from well-managed temperate hardwood forests from Australia, Europe and North America. Because this is not yet viable in all cases we have established the following interim policy. 

Timspec will only purchase timber: 

  • That has not been harvested from areas where traditional or civil rights are violated.
  • That has not been harvested from non FSC® or PEFC™ certified forests having high conservation values which are threatened by forest management activities. Timspec will not knowingly purchase timber which has come from high conservation value forests where the forest management activities threaten any of those values. High conservation value forests are any forests or forest areas that meet any of the following attributes:
  1. Forest areas containing globally , regionally or nationally significant concentrations of biodiversity values (e.g. unique or relict habitats, endangered species)
  2. Forest areas where most if not all naturally occurring species exist.
  3. Forest areas that are in or contain rare, threatened, or endangered ecosystems.
  4. Forest areas that provide basic services of nature in critical situations.
  5. Forest areas fundamental to meeting basic needs of local communities.
  6. Forest areas critical to local communities' traditional cultural identity.
  • That has not been harvested from genetically modifies trees. (This excludes clones and hybrids formed by natural processes, or the products of traditional tree breeding, selection grafting, vegetative propagation or tissue cultures. But does exclude any Genetically Modified Organism derived from a tree species, which has been produced by GMO techniques)
  • That has been harvested legally. (The harvester/logger has legal authority to harvest, this means that they have obtained any required concession licenses and/ or harvesting permits)
  • That has been harvested in a manner that complies with all applicable management planning requirements. (Harvesting/ logging has been done in such a way that it complies with management plan or equivalent documentation as required by local authorities) 
  • That has been harvested within harvesting restrictions as specified by the harvester. (Harvester/ logger has specifies diametre limits, species restrictions, etc and these restrictions have been observed)
  • That has been harvested from authorised areas. (Timber has not been harvested from protected and/ or illegal areas)
  • That has had all royalty payments, government levies and/ or other fees paid on it. 
  • That is not listed in Appendix 1 of the CITES list. (Cites(Convention on International Trade) in Endangered Species) is an international agreement between governments, of which New Zealand has been a member since 1989, which aims to ensure that international trade in animals and plants does not threaten their survival. Any species listed in Appendix 1 of the CITES list is threatened with extinction and for that reason Timspec will never knowingly trade any of these species)
  • That is not listed in Appendix 2 of the CITES list; unless it has export permit issued by the management authority of the exporting country. (Any species listed in Appendix 2 of the CITES list is not necessarily threatened with extinction, but in which trade must be controlled in order to avoid utilization incompatible with their survival. An export permit will be issued only if the specimen was legally obtained; and the trade will not be detrimental to the survival of the species)
  • That is not listed in Appendix 3 of the CITES list from the country that listed it; unless it has an export permit or certificate of origin (whichever is required as per CITES requirements) issued by the management authority of the exporting country. (Appendix 3 of the CITES list contains species that are protected in at least one country, which has asked other CITES parties for assistance in controlling the trade. In the case of trade from the country that included the species in Appendix III, an export permit issued by the management authority of exporting country is required. This may be issued only if the specimen was legally obtained)
  • That has met any transportation requirements. For Biosecurity and/ or other reasons timber may need to be transported in a particular manner, If such requirements exist, they must have been adhered to. 

Chain-of-Custody Certification

The directors of Timspec are proud to have FSC®and PEFC™ Chain-of-Custody certification and are committed to maintaining the standards and requirements of both of these certification schemes. Our accreditation requires both strict stock-control as well as annual audits to ensure the integrity of our Chain-of-Custody certification.
